Gerhard Andrées was born in 1936 as the son of a painter in the Mecklenburg town of Plau am See. From 1961 to 1963 he studied at the Werkkunstschule in Wuppertal , then until 1968 at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts . Here he was a student of free painting with Peter Janssen , 1969 as his master student. In the same year he received the European Prize for Painting in Belgium and two years later the Youth Art Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 1971 he has worked on various occasions with the sculptor Joachim Schmettau and the painter and graphic artist Peter Ackermann . In 1972 Andrées worked for the State Museums of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin.
